Check with your health care provider if there is no improvement within 2-3 weeks (48 hours in children under five) or if symptoms get worse.

Do not stop taking any prescribed medication without first consulting your health care provider.

Tell your complimentary practitioner about any prescribed medication you are taking, and any other complimentary treatments you are receiving.

Tell your health care provider about any complimentary treatments or remedies you are taking.

Always check with your health care provider before embarking on any complimentary treatment if you have any medical condition or symptoms of illness.

Do not embark on vigorous exercise without first consulting your health care provider if you have any serious medical condition, such as back pain, high blood pressure, or heart disease, or if you are pregnant.

People with persistent mental illness may be disturbed by hypnosis, visualization, and meditation.

Advise your practitioner if you have any sexually transmitted disease.

Do not begin a course of complementary therapy without first consulting your health care provider or midwife if you are pregnant, or trying to conceive.

Do not take or use any herbal or aromatherapy products during the first three months of pregnancy or if breastfeeding unless supervised by and experienced practitioner or your midwife.

Consult with your health care provider before allowing babies or infants to receive complementary treatments, as some, such as enemas and certain herbal remedies, are unsuitable for small children.

Children under 12 should follow complimentary treatments only with professional supervision and a health care provider's consent.

Children under 12 should not fast.

Do not take supplements of iron or vitamin A without first consulting with your health care provider. Do not exceed the recommended dosage of other supplements.

Do not take high doses of nutritional supplements without professional supervision.

Do not embark on fasts lasting longer than two days without professional supervision.

RED LIGHT SYMPTOMS Consult a health care provider immediately for:

Chest pain or shortness of breath, if there is acute pain in the chest, arms, jaw, or throat, call an ambulance.

Unexplained dizziness.

Persistent hoarseness, cough, sore throat.

Difficulty in swallowing.

Persistent abdominal pain or indigestion.

Coughing up blood.

Persistent weight loss or fatigue.

A mole changing shape, size, or color, or itching or bleeding.

Change in bowel or bladder habits.

Passing blood in the stool.

Vaginal bleeding between periods, after sex or after menopause, or unusual vaginal discharge.

Thickening or lump in a breast; discharge or bleeding from a nipple; change in shape or size of a breast.

Swelling or lump in a testicle; change in shape or size of a testicle; total and persistent failure to get an erection.

Severe headaches; persistent one-sided headaches; vision disturbances.

A sore that does not heal, or swellings.

Frequent and persistent back pain.

Unexplained leg pain and swelling.
